Of course, I explained to him that "vans" are also a real category of vehicle and reminded him where he might have seen one. I just found this an interesting example of where the language we use are derived from concepts that are once commonplace and then either disappear or, as in this case, become less visible to parts of our society.

These days when big vans are practically a thing of the past, it's understandable that kids don't even know what's a minivan from a van anymore.
Did your kid also wonder why sports cars are called that when such cars are often used outside speedways anyway? I wondered about that as a child.
It's a word that has lost its meaning when the original concept disappears in the vernacular.
That's probably the same reason as to why other antiquated expressions are lost in translation.
Minivans are actually a type of van designed for personal use and are either two-box or one box designs. They are also called multi-purpose vehicles or multi-utility vehicles (MUVs).
I think they called it mini because you associate vans as something big and looks like a truck.
Its rare to see mini vans these days. All i see now are trucks and huge vans.

They can call it a mini van because vans used to be associated with caravans so they called the smaller ones mini vans.

These days you can barely see mini vans on the road.
There are small vans and there are large vans if you notice. The confusion comes when people call all vans minivans.

Mini vans are so rare now a days. People consider them as hipster since you can decorate inside them whatever you want.
Some collectors still collects this mini vans. They are hippy and trendy. Other do some renovation on them such as putting stuff gps and etc.
That's funny because I got the same question from my 4-year-old and I had to answer that simply because it looks like a "mini candy" compared to a tootsie roll.

There's a lot of cars but I was also wondering why there are vans and mini van. I think it's because of the technology sometimes the bigger before' human's make it smaller right now I think smaller much better you can go anywhere and you can manage a thing if it's small.

Hahaha. The nissan dealers in ny I'm friends with, also know a child who's really been fascinated with car's mechanism, they said that he's really into car's chassis and model. Imagine, he's just 9 or 10 years old yet he managed to memorize at least a hundred car models, specs included.
Well, ford dealers in ny have had difficulty answering the question, too. I would say that the mini van most probably got its name from its engine. It may have the power of the van's engine, but it does not have the same mileage.
Well, a lot of car names are really difficult to understand as to why they were named as such. For instance, I was in the market for used hyundai genesis and up to now I am wondering why it's called genesis.

We usually derive "new ideas" from old concepts which we have forgotten, or haven't heard of yet. And I'm sure they're called "mini vans" because they're smaller than the traditional VANS we used to drive. I had the same question in mind, so I researched about it before I loaned a minivan.
On my opinion, it is referred to as "mini-van" simply because, of its size compared to the regular van. I like the curiosity of your kid by the way.
